The brilliant colors of fall!

This piece is done in collage and some parts acrylic on watercolor paper
size - 13x21

I love fall! My favorite season and my birthday is coming up on Sunday. My god it sure goes quick! The big 38! I feel so young! I actually feel like I'm in my early twenties.

When I was doing this piece I remember someone telling me once that I'd be a better artist if I kept myself away from crafting so much with collage. I love collage, I love mix media and I love anything that involves expressing myself in any medium. So he can kiss -you know what...my butt! That's right! This was a gallery owner. He said I did fabulous work but to keep away from the craft stuff-because people don't like so much craft in art- that it is not, considered real art.

I remember that day which was a long while ago. I went home and I started painting without collage and I was so unhappy. I couldn't paint. I was frustrated, angry even. Art to me is a spiritual journey, an adventure, fun fun!!!. It makes me happy to do what I like instead of creating something that someone else thinks is the right way to go- if you want to make it as an artist- what a load of crap I tell you. It takes away the beauty of it, that wonderful spark, the aliveness, that delicious feeling you get from doing what you love and the voice.
What is real art? hmmmmmm! real art is when is created from the heart, deep from the core of your soul, the visual passion that spill on the canvas. The sweet colors that form the essence of your being. I love what I do!!!!!!!!!
So don't he dare or anyone else mess around with my art!!!
That's right!

  4. Oh so adorable...I love it. And as for that person who told you to stay away from collage since it was a craft, tell him that Braque and Picasso invented it!!! I completed my formal art education in 2005, receiving my B.A. in art, with an English and American lit. minor. My discipline was in ceramics. My professor did his level best to insure there was no "craft" in his studio...until he met up with a feisty, menopausal, middle age grandmother who was one of his students. I told him I was going to make pots, bowels, spoons, and other funky functional and non-functional stuff...he couldn't help it, he just thought a was a piece of work, so I got to do what I wanted, got graded, and got good grades. The only thing that bothered me, ok, just one semester, is that when I entered my series of non-functional teapots, they weren't excepted in the student show, this big blob that looked like someone threw up on it got in from our dept. I also said the same thing, "Kiss my a--!!!!" LOL I never entered again and I'm doing much more now wonderful, fun stuff other than bowels, cups, etc. You go girl...have a great time and poo-poo on those snobs!!!

  5. Just this evening I was having dinner with friends and we had this discussion about being an artist. I was upset because I'm doing some art work for a friend of a friend and I had mentioned to the "friend" how her friend kept emailing me with changes and details on what she wanted. So she tells me that if I had a real "job" as an artist, people would be telling me what to do all the time! Well my friends at dinner freaked out! they agreed that I should just do my art, if someone likes it, fine. if not, that's OK too, feel free to find someone else to create it for you. I plan on finishing this "art job"!? and never getting involved in something so restrictive again! I have also come to the realization that a lot of what I paint/create is going by other peoples taste. I realized this when I was left with work that I hadn't sold but didn't want to hang in MY home either because it wasn't MY Taste. WOW, What is wrong with me!!! -from now on it's going to only be work that I love! not what I think someone else wants or what might sell! Sooooo..stay tuned! it could get scary! Ha! Ha! Thanks for the inspiring post!
Oh, by the way! -38 is still a baby! the best years are yet to come!
